The New York City Mission Society operates programs and provides initiatives concentrated in the areas of education, preventive services, personal growth and development, and recreation. Mission Society’s educational programs include tutoring, literacy instruction, computer training, and financial literacy instruction. The program also provides scholarship support to many college-bound program participants to help them to further their educational careers. Journal writing, work-readiness instruction, conflict resolution, and community service projects within the personal growth and development program help program participants to develop into self-confident people and develop social, self-awareness and emotional skills. In order to free the children from the harmful effects of poverty, such as the inadequate access to health care or high rates of teenage pregnancy, the organization provides prevention services such as teenage pregnancy prevention program, family and sexuality education classes that include tutoring, job training, martial arts, writing projects, and access to medical and dental care. Additionally, NYC Mission Society offers arts and recreation programs in music, dance, and arts and crafts that are offered to young people in the organization’s summer camp and in its after-school programs.
