The process of granting a wish starts with an initial referral by the child's parents, legal guardian, or health care provider. The child's medical eligibility is confirmed with the child's physician. Once the wish is approved and the paperwork completed, trained staff and volunteers work together to make the wish of the child come true. Wishes granted in the past have included visits to Walt Disney World and other destinations, meeting a favorite celebrity, having a shopping spree or helping kids experience what they want to be, such as the voice of a cartoon character or a model for a day. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County, NY, Inc. is one of 65 chapters in the United States and 33 International Affiliates of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America - the largest wish granting organization in the world.
