Stated Purpose:
" The Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) has created a unique, interlocking "pipeline" of educational, social-service, and community-building programs to over 20,000 children and families in a 97-block zone of Central Harlem. Our mission is to provide all of the 11,000 children we serve with holistic, wraparound support to help ensure that each and every one goes to college, earns a degree, and becomes a productive, professional adult. We are not only changing the trajectories of thousands of local children but also fueling the economy, revitalizing the urban environment, and radically improving residents' overall quality of life. Our efforts have resulted in unprecedented, large-scale success, radically transforming the community and inciting a groundswell of similar efforts across the country. "

Evaluation Conclusions

Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.

The pipeline starts with The Baby College, which teaches best-practices to parents of children 0-3. HCZ runs pre-kindergarten programs to get children on track early. Children then attend one of two Promise Academy K-12 charter schools or are supported by HCZ staff in the seven public schools in the Zone. HCZ also runs innovative elementary, middle, and high-school afterschool programs for local public school students. HCZ's College Success Office supports HCZ's students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, so they can successfully navigate the new challenges and responsibilities they face. Our ultimate goal and measure of success for all of our children is to graduate college, armed with the necessary education and resources to secure jobs and launch their careers.
