Programs

Founded in 1971 by community members to bring visual arts to the Borough, the Bronx Museum is dedicated to engaging diverse audiences through quality arts programming and providing a platform for the art world, underrepresented voices in the Bronx, and global community. The Museum strives to enhance the lives of the local community- Latino, African American, and recent immigrants from the Caribbean and West Africa- by providing impactful educational experiences, celebrating local cultures, and offering programs that fuel creativity and inspiration, while ensuring those who are underserved have access to the arts. Exhibitions feature the work of contemporary artists- ranging from emerging to established and reflecting the Borough's diversity- that explore urban narratives, latest developments in contemporary art, and topics and themes of interest to Bronx audiences. The Museum reaches disadvantaged Bronx youth through free or subsidized K-12 school education programs including guided exhibition tours, workshops, and school partnerships; afterschool and summer teen programs that develop students' skills in visual art and digital media; and weekend art-making activities for local families. The Museum actively engages the local community through an array of free public and community events, including live performances, poetry, storytelling, and film and video screenings. Core programs include professional development support for emerging artists; international projects and partnerships to support cross-cultural exchange; and a rich permanent collection of art works in all mediums by artists of African, Asian, and Latin American ancestry, including artists for whom the Bronx has been crucial to their artistic development.
