Name: New York Common Pantry
Address: 8 East 109th Street New York, NY 10029
Year, State Incorporated: 1982, New York
Stated Purpose: " NYCP is dedicated to reducing hunger while promoting dignity and self-sufficiency. NYCP champions the cause of the hungry through food pantry and meal distribution programs, nutrition education, basic hygiene services, homeless support, and related services. "
NYCP’s Pantry Program is New York City’s largest community-based food pantry and is designed to meet the needs of our families by providing culturally-appropriate and nutritiously-balanced food. Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, NYCP distributes grocery packages to over 1,000 families. NYCP’s Project Dignity is designed to meet other needs of homeless and hungry individuals in our community and consists of a range of services designed to meet the most basic needs of NYCP’s clients - food shelter, hygiene, medical services - as well as the larger, more challenging issues they face - long-term housing, health care, benefits, and employment. 365 NYCP is primarily a case management program, whereby all Pantry clients are screened to determine each client's Pantry eligibility, as determined by each client's residential zip code in relation to NYCP's Pantry catchment area. NYCP Hot Meal Program serves breakfast Monday through Friday and dinner on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Staff cooks prepare balanced meals with wholesome ingredients. Finally, NYCP’s nutrition education program, Nutrition Initiative for Children and Families (NICF), provides hands-on nutrition and cooking classes through adult workshops and children’s classes.
