Stated Purpose: " Facilitates the development of values and life skills essential for productive citizenship in inner-city youth through outdoor experiential education, year-round mentoring, and leadership training. "
Trail Blazers provides youth development programs for inner-city youth from the Metropolitan New York and New Jersey areas. Located on a 1,000 acre site, Trail Blazers engages participants through experimental learning that promotes emotional, social, intellectual, and physical growth, while emphasizing the development of the whole child. Trail Blazers operates programs including mentoring, leadership training, summer and winter outdoor experimental education, and after-school programs. The mentoring program offers children a one-to-one relationship with their mentors who provide friendship, support, and guidance. Within the leadership program, the urban youth learn a series of leadership skills in year-round activities such as community service, college tours, and receive career counseling. During the summer, approximately 300 New York and New Jersey youth come to Trail Blazers’ site to live, work, and play in an outdoor setting. Participants also learn survival skills and conflict resolution. In the winter, Trail Blazers offers an after-school program designed to provide a structured learning environment for young people ages 7-15 that have been exposed to urban poverty.
